San Diego Zoo Murals

Bee Corner inside the Children’s Zoo.

This project was created for the San Diego Zoo’s Wildlife Explorers Basecamp in the new Children’s Zoo. I had the opportunity to design large-scale wall murals, transforming initial sketches into fully rendered illustrations rich with texture and detail. Each mural highlights the unique characteristics of bees and the habitats they call home.

This colorful project was completed under the guidance of Design Team Lead Shana Fiduccia, with copy by writer Donna Parham.

A sktech of the wall spread, tree in the middle with bee habitats, on the left there is a section with different kinds of bees and a headline reading "No Hives. No honey. No problem."
A full color artwork of the mural spread witht he tree int he middle. A final headline reads "Native bees: Pollination Sensations."

I’ve illustrated close to 30 kinds of wild bees for these murals.

The California Native Bees mural was designed as a colorful photo-op backdrop for the Bee Corner.

A photo of the CA Bees mural in the room, it has a dome shaped header in lettering, fileds with cows and vegetables, at the foreground - a picnic blanket with pies and fruit, pumpkins and a rabbit hiding in-between them.

I feel fortunate that my family can visit, learn about these amazing bees, and experience the artwork I enjoyed creating.
